Thursday 13 - Cherry Blossom Time

We went for a drive into DC last weekend to see the cherry blossoms. We battled a TON of people, but got some really nice photos. So this week, my Thursday 13 is 13 (okay, it's 14, so shoot me) photos of the blossoms for you to enjoy!

Next Trip Is . . . . . . 13 Hints

Man, I've been a busy little bee recently. Yeah, I know I've been a big blog slacker, at least here on Gone To Plaid anyway. I've been trying to market the heck out of my new book The List. I just posted an excerpt from the book, btw, so check it out.

I didn't mean to ignore my travel blogging. Mostly, there wasn't anything exciting to blog about, but now there is!

We've just booked our next trip, to a place I never thought I'd want to go but now that I've researched it I'm stoked about going!

Where am I going?

Well, let's play a little blog game. Why don't you GUESS where I'm going, and then I'll tell you all about it in the next post?

13 Hints as to Where I'm traveling next:

1. Matt Lauer has been here
2. Wind is a big energy source here
3. It's a sailor's town
4. It's run by a monarchy, sort of
5. English is spoken, but it's a second language
6. One of the earliest "stock exchanges" was started here
7. Mind-alteration is openly accepted
8. Sex sells
9. A good way to see the city is by boat
10. I'll be sightseeing by bike as well
11. There's a flower garden here that gets more visitors between late March and May - 800,000 - than it gets all year.
12. I'll get to see Van Gogh's "Sunflowers"
13. Their shoes can NOT be comfortable!

Thursday 13 v. 74: Good/Bad

Thirteen Good Things and Bad Things

1. The Good: I approved the proof for my new book. Two weeks until you can buy it!

2. The Bad: Right after I approved it, Jim pointed out a mistake. A stupid mistake. I read it 8 times, and didn't catch it, so maybe no one else will. Can't change it now. This is what I get for not spending $2000 to get it professionally edited.

3. The Good: We leave for Las Vegas on Friday

4. The Bad: There's a front coming through over the weekend, making it cold and rainy there. Even calling for snow next week. SNOW in VEGAS!

5. The Good: We have a free car rental, and we were going to drive to Death Valley to see the moving rocks on Racetrack Playa

6. The Bad: Said front is also causing rain in Death Valley. It seldom rains in Death Valley, but it's raining this weekend when we wanted to go. Rain = bad roads and no seeing the moving rocks (can't walk through the mud and leave our footprints.)

7. The Good: It's supposed to be nice in Valley of Fire State Park on Sunday, so we'll probably go there instead.

8. The Bad: I would rather go to Bryce Canyon, but said front will bring snow there. And rain to Zion National Park. Damn you weather!

9. The Good: I broke down and vacuumed the downstairs - it was awfully dirty!

10. The Bad: The upstairs still needs to be done. I'm making that Jim's job.

11. The Good: I have a job, when a lot of people don't.

12. The Bad: Right before, and right after a vacation, things always get more stupid and more idiotic. (Can you say re-org? Again?) PS: Never have an idea at work. They think they want you to have an idea, but they really don't.

13. The Good: Did I mention we're going to VEGAS? :) Always good to end on a good.

Thursday 13 v. 73 Why I Hate Being Sick

Thirteen Reasons I Hate Being Sick

1. Sore throats. I hate sore throats. If there's one symptom that knocks me on my ass, it's a sore throat.

2. Watery eyes. I'm not crying, really.

3. Coughing draws way too much attention to myself.

4. We're going to Jim's parents house this weekend for our Christmas visit. Great impression, coughing all over your boyfriend's parents.

5. I hope the germs go away by next week, because we go to Vegas. Cold coughing plus breathing in cigarette smoke equals lungs falling out.

6. Lysol. I hate the smell of it, but I have to Lysol everything so we don't keep sharing the germ wealth.

7. Lack of smoochies. It was the smoochies that got me sick in the first place, as Jim was sick last week. I keep trying to tell him to take back the germs, but for some reason he won't do it.

8. Colds always get worse at night. Which is stupid. Because you need to sleep to get better, but you can't sleep because you feel like crap. What's up with that?

9. I always get the worst symptoms. Jim was just stuffy and sneezy. I've added coughy, drooly, headachy, achy, chilly and grumpy to the list.

10. Cold medicine is REALLY expensive these days.

11. Cold medicine also makes me feel loopy and sick to my stomach.

12. Chicken noodle soup. I have bad associations here - chicken noodle soup is what I ate when I was sick as a kid, so I don't like it. But I drink it, because it's magic.

13. I can't work out when I'm sick - wait, was that a bad thing?

Thursday 13 v. 72 Thirteen Reasons I Don't Have a Real 13 List

Thirteen Reasons I Don't Have a Real 13 List

1. I've been working on items for my new book. It should release soon! If you'd like to participate in my virtual book tour, visit http://thelistbook.blogspot.com.

2. I've been volunteering for more responsibility at work. I know, what was I thinking, right?

3. I've been planning our trip to Las Vegas. Less than a month to go!

4. While in Vegas, we'll be driving one day to Death Valley. I've been researching that, too.

5. It got really cold. Cold weather makes me want to hibernate.

6. We bought a new iMac. I need to spend time playing with the new 'puter!

7. The house hadn't been vacuumed in a long time. Too long. Spiders were getting too comfy. So out came the Dyson, and Pooh Bear had to hide.

8. I have a ton of shows to watch on the DVR. I'm uninspired by fall TV, so it's taking me a bit longer than normal.

9. I've been trying to adjust to the new, way-too-expensive, memory foam pillow I bought. Funny, my neck still hurts. Stupid pillow.

10. I've been stressing about Thanksgiving. It's the first joint holiday venture with Jim and I. Of course, my parents love him more than they love me. ;) The next weekend is Christmas with his family in Delaware.

11. It's really cold in Delaware.

12. I've been trying to find a pair of comfortable, black boots. I've been through every Joseph Seibel on zappos.com, and now I'm trying all the Clarks. I hate buying shoes.

13. I've been cutting coupons. I am now the coupon queen, so we can save 25 cents on toilet paper and such.

Thursday 13 v. 70 Blue Ridge Parkway Pics

Thirteen Pictures from My Leaf-Peeping Trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway

Jim and I took a little jaunt down I-64 to the Blue Ridge Parkway to see some of the fall color. It was a beautiful, if not crisp, fall day. Blue sky, colorful trees, and we ended the day in Charlottesville to get some Bodos Bagels. (And if you've never eaten Bodos bagels, they are the best bagels in the world. Most wouldn't think that the best bagels would come from Charlottesville, but they do!)

Thursday 13 v. 69 GO VOTE!

Thirteen Reasons EVERYONE needs to vote next week

Folks, this is not open season on anyone's political views - mine or any of my commenters. I, for one, think that what makes America strong is our diversity of opinions and our passions about them.

1. This may be the most pivotal election in your lifetime.
2. The economy is in the crapper. Clearly, somebody has to do something.
3. We are currently fighting two wars.
4. We just ran out of digit space on the National Debt Clock in Times Square.
5. My insurance company is charging me $10 per pill for my migraine meds, and they'll only give me 6 pills a month. Something is wrong with our system.
6. Even though the electoral system is stupid, your vote could be the swing for your state's votes to go to a candidate. So your vote does, indeed, count.
7. Yes, gas prices have fallen, but we're still lining the pockets of people that hate the U.S. We need to cut them off and cut ourselves off from oil dependence.
8. You should vote because I've made it to number 8 without sharing with you who I think can fix 1-7, I don't know how long I can hold out.
9. You need to vote because no matter what the polls say, this is a 50/50 race.
10. You can't bitch about things if you don't vote.
11. You should vote because it's one of the most patriotic things a regular citizen can do.
12. You must vote because there is a debate in this country about whether or not you are a "real American" if you don't believe a certain way, or live in a city rather than a small town. (Okay, I made it to number 12, I couldn't go anymore!) :)
13. You should vote because this country may be in more trouble if we have another 4 years that are anywhere near 90% like the last 8.

Thursday 13 v. 68 Cruise Ship Lingo

Thirteen Pieces of Cruise Ship Lingo

Do you know your starboard from your aft? :)

1. Always refer to your vessel as a ship not a boat.
2. The ship is always female. It's a "she" or a "her"
3. "Port" refers to the left side of the ship.
4. "Starboard" refers to the right side of the ship.
5. "Aft" refers to the rear or back of the ship.
6. "Bow" refers to the front of the ship.
7. A ship has decks not floors.
8. A ship has staterooms not rooms.
9. "Tender" is the vessel that you take to and from the shore when the ship is at anchor in a port.
10. The "bridge" is the place where the Captain and his crew steer the ship.
11. The "brig" is the ship's jail.
12. It is a "Purser's Desk" not an Information Desk or a Front Desk.
13. I can help you put this knowledge to work by helping you book a fun, cost-effective cruise! (Can I beg a little more?) Click on that big ad over there on the right to get to my Website.

Thursday 13 v. 66 Charleston Trip

Thirteen Reasons I am and am not happy to be going to Charleston, SC this weekend

    1. I've been covering for someone at work, starting work at 6 a.m. I now need a break.
    2. I've never been to Charleston, so I'm excited to see someplace new.
    3. Jim and I are going down to see if perhaps we'd like to relocate there, to escape the winters and get him some palm trees.
    4. It's a 6-hour drive. Not excited about that. However, I'll be taking the new Scion, breaking it in a bit.
    5. We haven't made any plans yet for sightseeing, though we are exploring neighborhoods with a realtor.
    6. I need tips for places to eat & things to do. If you have suggestions, let me know.
    7. Right now, the weather isn't looking terribly good. I hope the rain doesn't color my view of the city. And, I hope I don't get sick from walking around in it.
    8. Rainy weather doesn't make for good photos. :(
    9. I get to spend dedicated time with Jim. Yay!
    10. I'm sure there will be a Cracker Barrel along the way for dinner. :)
    11. We'll be staying on Daniel's Island, since we didn't want to shell out the big bucks for downtown accommodations.
    12. I hope I don't find a house I absolutely love NOW, and not be able to get it because we haven't moved yet.
    13. The good news is that when we get back, I can start the countdown to Vegas in December. :)

Thursday 13 v. 65 Cruise News

Thirteen Pieces of Cruise News from Carmen

    1. Princess Cruises is having one heck of a cruise sale to Europe in 2009, plus some bonus incentives, like a $100 on-board credit, a reduced deposit and a $120 coupon book.

    2. A comparison of a traditional hotel stay verses a cruise vacation comes down on the side of a cruise vacation every time. For instance, a Caribbean hotel/air stay is around $372 a day, and the cruise is $365.

    3. You could cruise for free if you're the leader of a group or club. Book 15 people, and the leader can go for free. Some ships have fewer restrictions.

    4. I have a new cruise group on Facebook, called Cruise Fun and Deals. It's open to anyone on crackbook, so sign up. :)

    5. Travel Industry Association (TIA) and the Air Transport Association (ATA) both urged Congress and the Bush administration to take action to shore up the credit markets, which provide much-needed support to travel businesses at every level. *My comment, no s*** Sherlock.

    6. If you want to go on a cruise in high season, for example, the Caribbean in the spring, booking 6 months in advance is not a bad idea.

    7. The much-heralded Celebrity Solstice set sail this week, on September 29. You can read more about it here.

    8. October 19-October 25 is World Explorer Week. There are going to be some great cruise offers during this week. Check back here for more information.

    9. The Disney Magic went into dry dock, and came out with some enhancements.

    10. On September 27, the Queen Mary 2 completed its 100th transatlantic crossing. When she arrived in New York, she had logged 711,288 nautical miles since her debut. Other stats include: More than 229,000 guests crossing the North Atlantic,, 450 pets crossing the North Atlantic, 97,000 pounds of lobster served and enough tea served to fill nearly five Olympic-sized swimming pools

    11. If you happen to have 108 vacation days in 2010, you can set sail on a world cruise with Crystal Cruises.

    12. The Miami Herald has a good story on which cruises are best if you have teenagers.

    13. As always, I encourage you to visit our cruise site, Expedia CruiseShipCenters Website (and enter to win a cruise.)

Thursday 13 v. 64 Princess Cruise Facts

Thirteen Things Carmen learned about Princess Cruises while earning her Commodore status

    1. Princess Cruises sails to the Galapagos. One of my dream destinations. Sign me up!

    2. Princess is big on the balconies - it has the largest proportion of balcony rooms.

    3. For those of you who enjoy scrapbooking, like me, they have a Scrapbooking@Sea program.

    4. They feature Movies Under the Stars, with a 300-foot LED screen, where they show first-run movies.

    5. They also use the LED screen for Playstation II tournaments, showing the Superbowl, etc. Did I mention the 300-foot LED screen?

    6. The Caribbean and Europe are their most popular destinations. I'd like to go on a Mediterranean cruise. Sign me up!

    7. They have some exotic destinations on their list - Asia and Australia are a few.

    8. You can package your air and any hotel stays with Princess, making it a seamless vacation purchase.

    9. Very few people get seasick on cruises. Good news for me.

    10. You can chose traditional dining (set time, same table each night) or Anytime Dining.

    11. You don't have to go buy the new formal dress, as there are other options, unless you really need an excuse to go buy a new dress, in which case, I'm giving you the excuse on a silver platter. There is at least 1 formal night offered on each 7-day cruise.

    12. No Princess employee is allowed to pass a passenger without saying "good morning" or something along those lines. Customer service is an obsession at Princess.

    13. If you sign up for my 7Seas list, I can get you some awesome deals on Princess, some of which, I'm not allowed to advertise. You can sign up at my Expedia CruiseShipCenters Website (and win a cruise in September.)

Thursday 13 v. 63 - Random Harry Potter-ness

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Thirteen Random Harry Potter Things
Tickets to opening night of the movie on July 11? Check. Book reserved and ready to pick up at 12:01 a.m. on July 21? Check.

  1. Which Harry Potter personality are you?
Find out your Harry Potter personality at LiquidGeneration!

  2. Daniel Radcliff was interviewed on the Today show Wednesday, and also Regis and Kelly, He's a cute kid. He's turning 18 in July. Emma Watson will be on the shows on Thursday.
  3. I'm going to write a strongly worded letter to the next newspaper with the headline "Will Harry Die in the Next Book?" That's why we read it, you morons. Geesh!
  4. I've had tickets to opening day of the Order of the Pheonix for 3 weeks. I was a big nerd, and signed up to be notified THE MINUTE they went on sale.
  5. "The guy" is reluctantly going with me to see the movie. He said he'll be ok as long as I don't dress like a character.
  6. I won't be dressing like a character for the movie, but maybe for Halloween. ;)
  7. I'm debating on going to the Harry Potter party at Barnes and Noble so I can get my book at midnight on the 21st. I don't think I'll convince "the guy" to do that with me.
  8. Daniel Radcliff says he doesn't think Harry will die in the last book, but he'll have to pay a big price.
  9. I've reread the last two books in preparation for the last book.
  10. I've re-watched all the movies to prepare for this movie.
  11. The Harry Potter theme song has been my ringtone for months. Maybe I'll have someone call me before the movie starts. :)
  12. Despite this list, this quiz says I'm only 21% obsessed with Harry Potter.
  13. Stay tuned for my reaction to the movie. I'll update in the a.m. UPDATE: Saw it. Loved it. But BOY did they leave a LOT of stuff out. I was suprised that the movie wasn't longer. However, it may be one of my favorites - a group of movies where the sequals aren't crap. I can't wait to see it again.

Thursday 13 v. 62 - "The guy" one

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Thirteen Things About "The Guy"
You guys have been asking, so here are a few details about "the guy." I don't want to talk about it much, because I'm enjoying having him all to myself, and don't want to jinx it. But here are the basics.
  1. His real initaials are JC
  2. He can always eat pizza
  3. He's not a fan of Mexican (food, not people)
  4. He's a dreamer, and he's just like Tom Cruise in Cocktail (no couch jumping or scientology) in that he's always looking for the next way to hit it big and retire rich, and immediately
  5. He always pays for everything, and has told me to stop asking if I can give him money for our dates. (Though he says if I just randomly want to give him $5, that'd be ok. ha.)
  6. Garlic is his favorite spice.
  7. He has a more subdued personality than me, but I'm bringing him out of his shell. He's getting to be as smart-alek-y as me. I've created a monster!
  8. He's a great kisser - makes my toes curl. ;)
  9. He's ticklish around the middle. The power! :)
  10. He shows his affection by "doing" things for me - fixing my computer, etc.
  11. He's allergic to Pooh Bear, but still spends the majority of his time off at my house. Pooh gets a new "wash" every week now, which he just LOVES (not) so hopefully that will help.
  12. He's very handsome, and sexy as all get out
  13. He got me flowers, because I took care of him when he was under the weather. (And one would hope because he likes me.)

Thursday 13 v. 58 - You Answer Vacation One

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Thirteen Questions About Vacations for You to Answer
I freely admit I stole the idea for the question 13 from Goofy Girl. Answer the questions in comments so I can get to know you better. My answers in italics.
  1. Where are you going on your next vacation? Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
  2. How many vacation days do you get a year? A measly 16 days. Waaaaaah!
  3. What's the best vacation you've ever taken? New Years Eve in Sydney Australia.
  4. Are you a beach vacation person? Occasionally. I actually don't like the sand much, and I can only sit around for so long.
  5. Have you ever taken a Disney vacation? I went to Disney World for one day in college. I have Mickey's autograph!
  6. How long will it be until your next vacation? What does the countdown say at the top of the page? It keeps on ticking down! Woo hoo!
  7. What is your dream vacation? To go back to Venice or Paris - this time with a special someone, to view it in a more romantic fashion
  8. Are you a light packer, or a pack rat? I try to fit as much as possible into my carry-on bag, having had my luggage lost twice now. So I'm a pretty good packer.

  10. Do you like to fly? Believe it or not, travel nut here is scared to fly. But it's nothing that a little valium won't cure.
  11. Have you ever taken a train trip? I had to take the train home from NY unexpectedly once, when my flight was cancelled for weather. It was awful. I think I'll avoid trains if I can in the US. But train travel in Europe was really nice.
  12. What's the most expensive trip you've ever taken? Same as the best one. Australia. It was expensive, but worth every penny.
  13. What's the most adventurous thing you've ever done on vacation? Hot air ballooning in Australia, snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, Climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge in Australia.

Thirteen Questions About the 80s for You to Answer

  1. Do you prefer Michael Jackson or Madonna? Then? MJ. Now? Madonna.
  2. Rubik's Cube - Solve it, toss it, or cheat by removing the stickers? I cheated, and made it unsolvable ever again.
  3. If one trend came back, would you rather it be leg warmers or jelly shoes? Leg warmers - jelly shoes were stinky and blister inducers.
  4. Duran Duran - Who's cuter? Simon, John Taylor, Nick or Andrew? Then? John Taylor. Now he's got a bald spot.
  5. Better Movie? Breakfast Club or Pretty in Pink? Breakfast Club
  6. Hotter Then? Anthony Michael Hall or Judd Nelson Judd Nelson
  7. Hotter Now? Anthony Michael Hall or Judd Nelson Anthony Michael Hall. Yummy!
