Thursday 13 v. 36 - The Thanksgiving One

Things Carmen Loves About Thanksgiving
No 13 next week. My parents are still on a dail-up connection, so I'm not even going to attempt to get online for 4 whole days!
  1. A 4-day weekend! Woo hoo!
  2. Time spent with Mom and Dad
  3. Mom's turkey dinner.
  4. Mom's dressing balls. I only get 'em once per year, cuz they're hard to make. But the are sooooooo good. (to answer everyone's questions, instead of dressing stuffed in the turkey, or baked in a pan, my mom mixes up the ingredients and shapes it into ball shapes. I much prefer this method to regular dressing.)
  5. Napping on the couch after Mom's turkey dinner with dressing balls.
  6. Shopping the day after Thanksgiving, though in my home town, there's not much shopping to be done.
  7. Putting the Christmas tree up on the Sunday afternoon that I return home.
  8. Getting to see my Grandmom.
  9. Did I mention the dressing balls?
  10. And the sweet stuff. I'm not big on pumpkin pie (it's ok, I'd just rather have my calories elsewhere), but there will be other choices. :)
  11. Watching the football game where UVA plays our most hated rival - Va Tech - with my dad. Down with turkeys! (Tech's mascot is a castrated turkey, but Tech people will swear it's not. Look up "Hokie" and you decide)
  12. Christmas music starts playing on the radio. Christmas decorations go up. It's official after Thanksgiving. (But shouldn't be up BEFORE!)
  13. I usually enjoy the fact that I'm done with my Christmas shopping, because you wouldn't catch me within 10 miles of Tyson's Corner mall after Thanksgiving. It's a nuthouse!
    1. Links to other Thursday Thirteens! Other 13 participants only. But everyone feel free to leave a comment, too! Comments rock!

Get the Thursday Thirteen code here!

The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in others comments. It's easy, and fun! Be sure to update your Thirteen with links that are left for you, as well! I will link to everyone who participates and leaves a link to their 13 things. Trackbacks, pings, comment links accepted!

Do I even want to know what dressing balls are? Hee.

I've actually been to Tech's campus, and it's beautiful - although I admit that I though the Turkey deal was a bit odd. Didn't know what a Hokie was, though. They are in denial, though!

I liked it a lot better when it was called Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute, but that was hard to fit on a T-Shirt.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

Yea, that's the go-ahead day for bringing out the Christmas stuff. Plus, if I'm busy putting up decorations I keep away from the craziness at the malls on the day after.

You are done your holiday shopping? Oh my god, I am so humbled. I made a list so far. But sheesh girl, I now want to go complete it this weekend. You are a monster!

I am curious about the dressing balls even though I don't like dressing. Football games are definately the best with a turkey sandwich to boot!

You put your tree up on sunday after Thanksgiving? Is that a usual time for the tree in America?

    Have a great Thursday!

I usually love Thanksgiving. Even the year when my husband was in Bosnia and I made Thanksgiving dinner for a dozen people by myself with 3 kids underfoot. This year I'm making the dinner, but I've got to make it early and then transport it. I'm not a happy camper.

(I'll snap out of it, but for now I'm pouting.)

Great list. I'm with you--Christmas decorations should be saved for after Thanksgiving...but Friday, its on!

And as for great football rivalries, we'll most definately be watching our beloved TX Aggies play the TX Longhorns Friday at 11, while we munch on left-over turkey and stuffing...the traditional kind....but I sure would love your mom's recipe!

For once, I've actually started my Christmas shopping before Thanksgiving...that doesn't happen often!

We do a neighborhood potluck. It's a lot less work that way! My friend Jayn makes the best pies in the world.

    Mine are on the couch.

Great list. :) Of course, being Canadian, I'm finding all of this week's Thanksgiving posts rather odd, since Thanksgiving was last month for all of Canada. :)

    Enjoy visiting your parents. :)

    Happy T13. :)

Oh, I love how Thanksgiving ushers in the Christmas season. My husband and I always watch Christmas movies together as a special "here comes Christmas" ceremony.

and naps! Football! Maybe we'll try putting the dressing in balls...

Dressing balls!! That sounds like the food of the Gods. There is nothing I like more than dressing, and wow, in the shape of a ball - brilliant! I would eat them with my fingers dipped into gravy - yum. Not sure if there was anything else on your 13 - couldn't get past the dressing balls. :)

It sounds like you have wonderful plans, hadn't realized how close Thanksgiving is since we do not celebrate it over here (Chilean/German household, lol)
Happy tt and enjoy those dressing balls!

Based on #5, are we to assume you snuggle up on the couch, with the dressing balls, for a nap?

I can see you spooning now...

I look forward to my parents' Thanksgiving cooking. Too bad I am having Thanksgiving at my house this year. They better realize they are getting off the plane and immediately cooking their stuffing!!

I can't wait for Thanksgiving now!
    Great list.
I'm in Floyd County VA - Tech territory. Not that I'm a big fan - but just thought I'd tell you. I have heard that the dictionary states they are castrated turkey's. Why on earth would anyone name a team that?
    My 13 are posted too!
    Have a great Holiday.

Enjoy it all, Carment! Have a blast!

My most unfavorite part? Cooking for almost 2 days, then watching the dinner get wolfed down in 20 minutes. AAAAAIIIEEEEE!!

It sounds like you are having a great time. I'm spending Thanksgiving with my Aunt and her family on the actual Turkey-Day, and then my entire clan is getting together for the weekend.

Mmmmm turkey and dressing! Can't wait!!

I'm so jealous of American Thanksgiving. It's way better than our much too early Canadian version. For one thing a FOUR day long weekend including a Thursday and a Friday. Our silly little tack on a holiday Monday is for the birds.

Plus it seems even more family orientated.

I would love to have your mom's recipe for dressing balls! Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm so with you on the Christmas thing...I welcome and love the decorations, music, and all AFTER Turkey Day, but before (not to mention on HALLOWEEN) is just way to soon! Have a great one!!

    Wystful1 said...

Okay....can't resist this one---it's a good thing you mentioned dressing balls...I don't know what I'd say if you mentioned turkey balls. Well, you did bring it up in a way. Casterated turkey indeed!! roflmao

Me? The best thing about Thanksgiving meal is the gravy! I rarely have gravy any more and this holiday I make sure there's plenty of it. Oh, and I do like to cook the meal. Then, this year 'my' Denver Broncos game will be televised. Yay!!!! (don't think they have a chance in China to win tho---I'm pretty sure they play Dallas! ---shhhhh, don't tell any of my Texas neighbors I'm a Denver fan. I'd be lynched! lol)

ok... I am SO with you on the Christmas stuff! It's 100% ok to engage in the Christmas Spirit AFTER the turkey has morphed into turkey sandwiches...

    Yay!! Thanksgiving is so fun!!

Stuffing balls sounds like a great idea. If I have to pick, Im gonna have to root for Tech, but your right, its a Turkey.

I want some of those dressing balls... I'm soooo drooling right now!! :)

Hey Carmen, Your mums dressing balls sound quite similar to german dumplings, or knodles.(which are also similar to dumplings) I'm not a fan of stuffing, but in that format they sound pretty good. Loving the new hair too! I've wondered what you looked like sans hat. I'm visiting from Kukka's site.
