Backyard Surprise

I love having a back yard. I was on a conference call yesterday, while sitting outside on my new patio furniture, and something dive-bombed my head. I was thinking it was a BOUS (Bee of Unusual Size), and prepared to completely freak out, but it turns out, it was a hummingbird! He was beautiful - he was green with a red throat, and was much bigger than I expected him to be. He fed on the flowers that hang over my fence, and then flittered away. I'm going to buy a hummingbird feeder, to make him fat, and have him bring some friends over.

Be sure to get a good feeder. The one I bought mostly attracted ants. They like the sugary feeder-water that was leaking from inside the cheap-o one I bought. The downside was that I didn't get any hummingbirds.

How fun! We ocassionally have hummingbirds attracted to the red gerianiums on the porch. They are fun to watch. Good thoughts and prayers still coming your way!

I read somewhere that hummingbirds, tho colorblind according to scientists, are attracted more to 'red'!

When we lived in arizona, they loved the trumpet vines --which were a deep, deep orange.

Ya, they're super. I need to get a feeder outside too....ours that we had was so filled with sooty sugar water and dead ants ---that I tossed it. Didn't even want to scrub the sucker out....buying a new one is easier. LOLOLOL

I assume that Pooh has no access to the backyard? We wanted to get a birdfeeder a while ago, but then we realized it would be unfair for the birds to be sitting targets when Cat is out and about hunting...

We had hummers in TX but they wouldn't share the feeder. One would come and fight off any other hummer who came near. So I ended up putting out 3 feeders in hopes that other birds could get to the other two...nope this big meanie wanted all 3 feeders to himself. But there were two birds that would tag team the meanie...one would divert meanie and the other would feed and then they would switch. It was great fun to watch, but I was hoping for lots of birds like I used to see in LA when I was a kid.
We have a feeder and they do come here, but they haven't been convinced that we are a good source of food yet. I should find out what flowers they like here to plant some for them.
Enjoy your hummers. They are fun.

Looks like you're sure enjoying your new home. And you're getting new visitors, too!

Wow, I've never heard of a bird flying into someone's head.

I'd like to have a yard someday. But for now, I'm thankful for my patio :)

Can I come visit. I'm just thinking that if dinner is just going to come dive bombing around then I want to be there!
