I heard a song right before my vacation that really struck me, and I wanted to share the lyrics with you. It's by the Dixie Chicks, and it's called Taking the Long Way. You know, if my life was an album, this might well be the title track. It's about not going with the crowd, or as my mom would say, it's like being a salmon and swimming upstream. But those little salmon are damn happy when they get there. :)
Taking the Long Way (selected lyrics)
My friends from high school/ Married their high school boyfriends
Moved into houses/ in the same zip codes where their parents lived
But I/ I could not follow
No I/ I could not follow
I've been a long time gone now/ Maybe someday, someday I'm gonna settle down
But I've always found my way somehow
By taking the long way/Taking the long way around
Taking the long way/ Taking the long way around
I met the queen of whatever/ Drank with the Irish
Smoked with the hippies/ Moved with the shakers
Wouldn't kiss all the asses that they told me to
No I/ I could not follow
No I/ I could not follow
It's been 2 long years now/ Since the top of the world came crashing down
I'm getting it back on the road now, but I'm
Taking the long way/Taking the long way around
Taking the long way/ Taking the long way around
Oh I just take my time I won't lay down
And take the long way around
Well I've run with a stranger and met myself
I opened my mouth and heard myself
It can get pretty lonely when you show yourself
I guess I could've made it easier on myself
But I/ I could not follow
No I/ I could not follow
Well I never seem to do it like anybody else
Maybe someday, someday I'm gonna settle down
If you ever want to find me I can still be found
Taking the long way/Taking the long way around
Taking the long way/ Taking the long way around

I really enjoy that song! I just really enjoy the Dixie Chicks (outspoken or not!) they do make good music! Thanks for sharing those! Happy Monday!
I think it's okay to take the long way around! You get MORE outta life takin' the long road! I have a son that I always say he's taking the long way... but he'll get there eventually! And yea... life could be easier if you choose the short way... but it WON'T be as interesting!
I have not heard this song yet. I love the lyrics. It reminds me of myself. I need to hear it now! lol
Now you're thinking like a motorcyclist! We specialize in taking the long way... I'll have to track this song down. I don't listen to much country music but I like the lyrics you posted.
As for myself... I have far too many favorite songs to post. But I'd have to put Hoobastank's "First Of Me" on the list and Chevelle's "The Clincher."
I always liked "I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred :)
Actually the opening lines your song reminded me of another song...
"My friends all grew up
They settled down
In nice little houses
On the outskirts of town
They work in their office
They drive SUV's
They pray for their babies
And they worry 'bout me..."
Lyricmaster B, signing off....
I love this WHOLE CD. The Dixie Chicks Rock!
I love songs and love to sing along (that's why I couldn't ever own an iPod, people would stare at me out in the streets!). I often find some lines that speak to me!
I have songs I like, songs I play to impress, songs to do the chores to, but the song I like that makes me cry is a song of a lost opportunities, and it strikes a chord:
"Cat's in the Cradle"
A child arrived just the other day,
He came to the world in the usual way.
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay.
He learned to walk while I was away.
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew,
He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad.
You know I'm gonna be like you."
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."
There's absolutely nothing wrong with taking the long way around! I encourage more people to try it.
Ok, so I'm not a big country music fan but I like the Dixie Chicks, especially, "Not Ready to make nice". Story of my life on many occasions.
